MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

We’re borrowing a page from U.S. Soccer Global’s book here, but tonight Reading are playing Arsenal and the game is on TV here at the hotel. Soccer has been on around the clock here. Yesterday alone featured games from Italy, Spain, France and a local cup match between Free State Stars and Mamelodi Sundowns. Tonight’s program is entitled Monday Night Football, and it is counting down to the aforementioned Premier League game. Benni McCarthy is a featured guest, and he’s talking about the buildup to this weekend’s match as well as preparations for the 2010 World Cup. Coincidentally, Bob Bradley sat next to McCarthy on the plane down to Jo’burg and the two spoke about various news items in world football. McCarthy also said the pitch at Ellis Park is in great shape, and with training at the stadium tomorrow, we’re all looking forward to our first venture into the city…

how many players will be added to the camp?

my guess is none, other than Spector and Pearce. Why would any Euros be added now instead of being on the initial roster, the same thing for the MLS guys (except for Chicago and KC guys who could have been playing in the MLS final). Also while they have the whole week they had more time for the Swiss game, so it doesn't make as much sense to bring guys who won't play. Which is probably why the initial number was going to be 17, 11 starters and 6 subs, which is usually the number allowed for friendlies.

That's a fairy good point Fritz. However, remember before the Switzerland game when guys like Preston Zimmerman, Tally Hall, and Steve Purdy were called in. They were basically called in to allow Piotr Nowak to evaluate them for the U-23 squad. Having only 18 players in camp makes little to no sense. 22-23 would be the preferred number. That would allow an 11v11 training match as well as provide adequate cover for any injuries picked up during camp. They may not announce additional players, but I'm assuming that there are ones on standby or ones who have been told that they're welcome to join in on training to help with preparations.

It's the same reason that Michael Bradley was in training camp for the World Cup team, 20 players plus 3 goalkeepers doesn't allow for too many people to sit out during a training match.
