Fulham Charge for Europa League; Dempsey Named Fulham's Player of the Month

Fulham kept up their fine form in the Premier League by defeating relegation-threatened Newcastle United 1-0 at St. James' Park. A first-half goal from Diomansy Kamara was the difference as Fulham romped to a second consecutive win in the league. The three points kept Fulham in seventh place and ensured the Cottagers of their best-ever Premier League finish. Five years ago Fulham finished ninth in the table but Saturday's win means they can do no worse than eighth place.

Clint Dempsey played 90 minutes for Fulham on Saturday after picking up an award from the club earlier this week. Dempsey was named Fulham's Player of the Month for April, a month in which he scored two goals in a memorable Easter Sunday win against Manchester City.

Dempsey and Fulham will be in action one more time this year as they look to secure the final Europa League spot for next season. Manchester City and West Ham were knocked out of contention today, leaving only Fulham and Tottenham left to contest seventh place. Fulham hold the advantage over their London rivals, but nothing is sewn up yet. Here are the scenarios:

Fulham qualify for the Europa League if:
  • they beat Everton next Sunday
  • they tie and Tottenham beat Liverpool by less than five goals on Sunday
  • they lose and Tottenham fail to win.

I've been hoping for Fulham to reach Europa all year. Question, though. Would playing in Europa improve Clint's game enough that he would help MNT more than he already is? Or would qualifying be something FFC would use to recruit/attract more Yanks. At one time last season, we had 5 playing for Fulham.
