On this date in history ...

Well, if this date was Oct. 15 ...

Got to wondering if the U.S. had ever played a match on Oct. 15, and sure enough there is one time since the Federation was founded in 1913 that the U.S. saw action on this date. Unfortunately, the result didn't go in our favor as we got blanked 3-0 by Saudi Arabia in the Kings Cup (which is now known as the Confederations Cup) in 1992 in Riyadh.

Come to think of it, next time we'll try to control our curiosity ...

...or you could have discussed games actually played on October 13. There have been two (that I've found).

1. October 13, 1993 versus Mexico in DC, 1-1 tie (Cobi got the lone US goal)
2. October 13, 2004 versus Panama in DC, 6-0 win (where EJ got his first, and so far only, hat trick)

BTW, the 2004 win against Panama in DC secured our spot in the final round of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup, just as Saturday's win in DC did the same for WC 2010.

That 1992 game in Riyadh was very disappointing. The US showed quite well, actually and just didn't get the breaks.

Of course, having Jean Harbor as your primary offensive sub might have had a role in that.

The next game, with arguably a weaker team (although bolstered at the front by Wynalda), the US bounced back with a 5-2 win over the Ivory Coast.
