Today's Referees - We've Got History

Running the middle today is Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda. Name sound familiar?

Does 1-1 draw and three red cards in the World Cup ring a bell? Mr. Larrionda, who also did the France-Portugal semifinal in Germany, officiated the USA's tie against Italy in which he issued four yellows and three red cards. Seeing straight red on June 17, 2006, in Kaiserslautern were Daniel de Rossi and Pablo Mastroeni, while Eddie Pope was handed two yellow cards.

Also part of the crew tonight is fourth official Coffi Codjia, who served in the same capacity in the USA-Brazil game last week and signalled to the referee that Sacha Kljestan deserved to be sent off.

Are you serious? How did that guy ever get another gig? The conspiracy theorist in me is buzzing!

Whistle happy and card happy AWESOME. Something tells me Spain will fall on the drop of a hat and somehow we'll be to blame.

At an initial look, it looks like a negative. Hopefully BB will use this to emphasize that they should play smarter and not make late challenges that have the possibility of receiving a red.

That's a conspiracy if ever there was one!

Why are we getting this referee? Isn't this a little unfair?
Please, USA, no reds!

FIFA gets a RED CARD for appointing this Official.

Go get em USA.

It's true, we just don't get the benefit of the doubt. At least Mastroeini won't be on the field to make ridiculous tackles this time.

I agree with turntosidetwo, someone needs to nail this guy...not by accident though.

Nice, like we wouldn't have had to worry about Spain flopping all over the pitch like 11 dieing fish as it was.

Phantom fouls that draw cards where replays show to have little or no contact is today's first drinking game.

When is US Soccer going to do something about American players being sent of with stright Red cards? How is it possible that they allowed this same referee to do this game? If US Soccer doesn't do something about this, then maybe we need new leadership!!!
