Cooper Heads to 1860 Munich

U.S. MNT forward Kenny Cooper has signed for 1860 Munich and is set to undergo a medical with the 2.Bundesliga club. Cooper, who was recently named to the CONCACAF Gold Cup all-tournament team, scored 40 goals in 93 appearances for FC Dallas since joining them in 2005. 1860 Munich has some history with American internationals, having had World Cup veterans Gergg Berhalter and Josh Wolff on their books as recently as a few years ago.

Random Fun Fact: German film director Rainer Werner Fassbinder, an MNT Blog favorite, was a huge 1860 fan.

Really? Isn't that backwards step going to a second division German team? Would he really have done so worse making the most of his season at FCD and helping them grow this season?

If Cooper makes the kind of splash he's capable of, he won't spend very long in Bundesliga 2. Cooper is 24 and has a record of scoring a goal roughly every other game at every level he's played. If he keeps that up he'll soon be targeted by larger clubs. He's scored 4 goals in 9 caps for the national side, with most of his appearances coming as a substitute. So what is Bob Bradley's problem?

He gives this guy 45 minutes total in the entire Gold Cup and instead Ching, a decent MLS player in his 30s and nothing more now or in the future, eats up all the minutes in a supposedly "experimental" line-up. More like just a rubbish line-up. A rational person might conclude that Ching played himself off the team, but never underestimate the inexplicable blind loyalty of Bob Bradley to certain players. We would never have seen Davies or DeMerit if it weren't for injuries.

Mentally, tactically and physically, our team is ill-disciplines, disorganized and clearly unprepared for matches. The confederations cup run was just an aberration, the result of luck and the players taking things into their own hands. Sunil "Five-nil" Gulati should recognize Bob Bradley is holding this team back and do what's necessary - part with some cash and hire a real manager - Roy Hodgson would be perfect. I'll happily predict Project 2010 ABJECT FAIL if we maintain the status quo.

If you think the 2. Bundesliga is more physical than MLS, you haven't watched MLS, well, ever.

I don't understand what going to a team that was relegated five years ago, and looks to be firmly rooted outside the top flight does for him. If he does well, he's still going to have to move to a good team in the 2. Bundesliga before getting into the top flight.

You don't see too many people who go straight from a middling second division team to a top flight team.

I agree with Caleb's and I like Tuesday's comments.Hopefully he plays very well and the team moves up or he does.
More importantly why didn't he start against Mexico in Gold cup final? He was recognized as one of the better players in the tourny with his best eleven role. He's big, strong and huge. The mexicans fear players like that.Simply intimidating. The guy scores as well. The downfall of this team in the 2006 WC was Bruce Arena's love and damaging loyalty to certain players.Mr. Bradley can't afford to make the same mistake or the results will be the same.Quaranta should have also started that match.Ching plays well, but when put in his role;he is a pure bred striker.A scavenger.Give him the ball in a good spot and he's too experienced to miss. However age is a factor. He can't be asked to run all over the pitch. That's someone else role.Donovan can't be asked to be a central defender...it won't work.Play the best players in their positions and that's it.We'll be fine. The game is simple and beautiful.
